RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight on show

at North Weald Airfield Open Day and Fly-in

On Sunday the 18th of May the skies above the historic and still very active North Weald Airfield will once again echo to the sight and sound of Hurricane and Spitfire aircraft; as the Royal Air Force Battle of Britain Memorial Flight flies in salute over North Weald village. Before landing to join in a unique family event, The Spirit of North Weald Fly-in and Airfield Open Day, commemorating the 90th Anniversary of the birth of the RAF and celebrating the Spirit of North Weald Airfield and its Community

Visiting aircraft will also be taking off and landing throughout the day; joining a wide selection of aircraft from the airfields historic collections on public view. Fly-pasts of representative military aircraft that have flown from RAF North Weald will take place from 12 noon onwards.

This partnership event; managed by The Squadron – North Weald and Epping Forest District Councils in conjunction with airfield tenants/users, will open from 9.30 am until 4pm, with a nominal entrance charge of only £2 per person [proceeds of which will go to the airfields Hurricane Gate Guardian Project].

It promises to be a great day out for all the family. A wide variety of community, business, leisure and aviation based organizations will be on show with their Stalls/Displays/Attractions. Hot/cold refreshments will be on sale throughout the day with a BBQ and pay bar open at The Squadron from 12noon.

A highlight of this special day will be the formal roll out and unveiling of the airfields new gate guardian. A full sized replica of a Hawker Hurricane fighter aircraft that flew from North Weald during the Battle of Britain, symbolizing The Spirit of North Weald Airfield and its community since flying began here in 1916;. providing the first public view of this emotive “aircraft” which will be mounted in a realistic flying position at the airfield entrance later in the year.

The Hurricane replica will be ceremoniously rolled out and unveiled by Wing Commander Tom F “Ginger” Neil DFC, who flew the depicted aircraft from North Weald during the Battle of Britain, at approximately 1.30pm. Following which, the RAF Memorial Flight aircraft will taxi out to take off and perform fly-pasts in salute over the airfield and its new gate guardian.
